“We all make choices, but in the end our choices make us.”
To live life is to make choices. It just comes with the territory.
One definition of a choice is “the opportunity or power to make a decision.” The word that should get to you in that definition is “power.” We have the power to decide what we will or won’t do when faced with a choice.
When it comes to staying on plan and being healthy, the right choice can be hard—but it’s so very rewarding in the long run. Here are some tips for making healthy choices.
Know What You’re Up Against
There are so many factors that can push you to choose unhealthy foods including: social pressure at events like weddings; family influences at holiday gatherings; and advertisers who use color, packaging, placement, and ads to make you think that the bad stuff is really ok for you.
As Eliot mentioned in one of his Why Weight Facebook videos, sometimes being on a structured eating program means going to social events and actually saying no. Now, you’re not bad if you don’t, but the social function shouldn’t be the excuse to make a poor choice.
If you can remember what you’re up against when it comes to good eating choices, that can help you make a better decision.
Science has proven that having a specific goal greatly increases your chance of success. The next time you know you’re going to be faced with food choices at an event, set a goal for what you want to achieve.
- My goal is to not eat dessert at the wedding.
- My goal is to skip the wine and order seltzer with lime.
Try to be specific when possible. A goal of “I’m going to make good eating choices at the wedding,” might give you too much room to cheat.
Here’s what solid goals do for you:
- They keep you focused.
- They let you concretely measure your progress and success.
- They motivate you with something specific to shoot for and get excited about.
The Why Weight program is six short weeks or 42 days. That’s 42 daily decisions to get and stay healthy. That’s a goal worth setting.
Enjoy The Benefits Of Good Choices
“If you make the choice to eat it, that’s a choice,” says Eliot. And we all default at times a make the poor choice. However, there are so many benefits of healthy eating that can motivate you to stay on track.
Recent studies have shown that what we eat has a big influence on who we become. According to a Thrive Global article, healthy eating offers five specific benefits:
- A better mood
- Increased energy levels
- Reduced depression
- Improved learning ability
- Better self-esteem
The healthier you become through good choices, the more you want to stay that way, so it gets easier to make those good choices—almost without thinking about it.
When you make healthy choices, you’re choosing to love yourself. You’re choosing to be present and disciplined about your health—even when it’s hard.
Practice your power of good choices and let that motivate you to keep getting healthier every day.
