What motivates most of us to keep losing weight? Well…losing weight. As we watch the numbers on our scale go down, that generally inspires us to stay on plan and keep dropping pounds.
But what happens when we hit a weight loss plateau and the numbers won’t budge? If that’s all we’re focusing on, we can get really discouraged—especially when we’re still doing all the right things.
This is when it’s important to keep a positive attitude, continue following our weight loss plan, and remember that our overall goal is to get healthy – not just lose weight.
Look At The Bigger Picture
A weight loss plateau gives us an opportunity to step back and see the bigger picture: that we care enough about our health to work hard on our goals.
Look back to where you were when you started this process, and you’ll realize just how far you’ve come. You have better eating habits. You’re exercising more. Your clothes are probably fitting better. And you have more self-confidence.
Success is not just the numbers on your scale. It’s the improvement of your overall health, happiness and well-being. Keep that positive affirmation in mind to fight off “plateau discouragement.”
Accept Your Weight Loss Plateau
“Plateaus are an unfortunate but inevitable part of any long-term weight loss journey,” says TheLemonBowl.com. “Instead of becoming frustrated, embrace the plateau and remember that it is a sign that your body is becoming healthier and stronger.”
Remember, too, that true motivation comes from within, not from narrow standards of weight or size that bombard us from magazines, TV, and the internet. You get to decide what’s best for you.
And even when you don’t feel all that positive, “just start adopting those healthier habits anyway,” says WebMD, because changing your habits really can help change your attitude.
Accepting yourself right where you are gives you the freedom to choose your best outcomes and move toward them.
Eating Healthy Food Helps
The better you eat, the better you feel, which is a big part of maintaining a positive attitude. Here’s one of our great recipes to keep you satisfied while you wait for the plateau to break (which it will).
Fra Diavolo Sauce with Shrimp & Scallops
Ingredients:
· 6 cloves garlic, crushed
· 3 cup whole peeled tomatoes, chopped
· 1 ½ teaspoons salt
· 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
· 7 oz. small shrimp, peeled and deveined
· 7 oz. bay scallops
· 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Sauté garlic over medium heat in non-stick skillet. When the garlic starts to sizzle, pour in the tomatoes. Season with salt and red pepper. Bring to a boil. Lower the heat, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Lightly coat a large skillet with cooking spray and add the shrimp and scallops. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently, or until the shrimp turn pink. Add shrimp and scallops to the tomato mixture and stir in the parsley.
Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the sauce just begins to bubble. Serve with joy! Makes 4 servings.
